Lamai is known for its beautiful beaches and a slightly more relaxed atmosphere compared to Chaweng. For many, it’s a good alternative to Chaweng when you’re looking for a less crowded area. That also means that you can’t take advantage of all the perks Chaweng has to offer.

3. Bophut

Bophut is an area near Chaweng Beach where you can find the charming Fisherman’s Village, a popular place to be in the evening with many restaurants and beachfront bars. Maenam is an area further away from Chaweng Beach but close to Bophut. That automatically means the area is even quieter than Bophut. It’s one of the great options for those who seek a peaceful beach with a more local feel. Just keep in mind that you will find fewer amenities here.

5. Bang Por Beach

Arguably the least touristy area that we recommend in this article. It’s a good choice for travelers seeking tranquility and a glimpse of local life. 6. Choeng Mon

Go directly to this part of the article for more in-depth information.

Choeng Mon is one of the most family-friendly areas on the island and comes with a beautiful sandy beach and calm waters. However, it’s also one of the most upscale parts of Koh Samui. If your budget allows it, then definitely check out this area. There are also plenty of accommodations for couples. Party-minded travellers should not stay on this part of the island.

7. Taling Ngam

Where to stay in Koh Samui first time

The most convenient areas to stay in Koh Samui for first-time visitors are Chaweng Beach, Lamai Beach, and Bophut

These areas are located in the tourist epicenter of the island and make your stay incredibly comfortable.

However, there are quite some alternatives for those seeking something more unique, less touristy, and off-the-beaten path.

Maenam Beach, Taling Ngam, and Lipa Noi, for example, are prime examples that Koh Samui still has hidden gems available on the island that aren’t spoiled by mass tourism (yet). Just keep in mind that these areas come with fewer modern amenities.

Those looking for a luxurious experience should consider staying at Bang Por Beach (ideal for couples and honeymooners) and Choeng Mon (also family-friendly).

Where to stay in Koh Samui with family

There are several family-orientated areas to find in Koh Samui.

The most convenient area in Koh Samui in general, Chaweng Beach, is a great option, but there are alternative areas that mainly target families.

Lamai Beach, for example, is a more laid-back option to Chaweng Beach that still offers plenty of modern amenities and comforts.

Bophut is a typical area that mainly targets families with plenty of family-friendly activities and a beach with calm waters.

Families seeking a more authentic vibe should consider staying in Maenam Beach

If your budget allows it and you want something luxurious, then Choeng Mon is your best option.

Another recommended area is Lipa Noi, which also offers luxurious resorts.

The only thing with Lipa Noi is that you’re located on “the other side of the island”, which means you’re located further away from the main attractions, but do have great access to the ferry services.

Where to stay in Koh Samui for nightlife

When it comes to nightlife in Koh Samui, there is one absolute winner, namely Chaweng Beach.

The area around Soi Mango is full of bars, clubs, and other entertainment venues.

Keep in mind the presence of adult entertainment in this part of Koh Samui.

A great alternative is Lamai Beach, which is a lighter version of Chaweng Beach but is definitely a great nightlife area too.

For those seeking a calmer night out, with beachfront clubs, lounges, great restaurants, and a few bars, head over to Bophut.

There, you can find the Fisherman’s Village, which is a far more family and couple-friendly area to spend the evening.

Where to stay in Koh Samui for couples

The best areas to stay in Koh Samui for couples are Bang Por Beach (especially for honeymooners) and Choeng Mon.

These two areas offer secluded, luxurious, and comfortable resorts and villas that are ideal for couples.

Couples who want a bit more of an off-the-beaten-path experience should consider staying at Taling Ngam Beach and Lipa Noi

Taling Ngam in particular is great for those who want to have something luxurious on “the other side of the island”.

However, if you want to stay in an area with all the comforts a tourist can think of, simply stay at Chaweng Beach or Lamai Beach, especially if you want to party together until the late hours.

Where to stay in Koh Samui for Full Moon Party

The best area to stay in Koh Samui for the Full Moon Party is Lipa Noi.

As the Full Moon Party takes place in Koh Phangan and not Koh Samui, you want to stay as close as possible to the ferry services.

Lipa Noi is by far the best option if you want to attend the Full Moon Party.

However, it’s also possible to stay at popular nightlife areas like Chaweng Beach and arrange transport to the ferry services.

Keep in mind that the ferry services are often fully booked days before the party itself and in the worst case, you need to rent a private speed boat to reach the island of Koh Phangan. In other words, make sure to get the ferry tickets on time.

Where to stay in Koh Samui for honeymoon

The best areas to stay in Koh Samui for honeymoon are Bang Por Beach, Choeng Mon, and Taling Ngam Beach.

Bang Por Beach is a secluded area with many luxurious resorts who are specialized in offering a carefree holiday. This part in particular is known for being a honeymoon destination.

If you’re seeking a bit more of a bustling area, but in an exclusive area, Choeng Mon is the best option for you. You’re located near the tourist epicenter of the island, yet it caters to those seeking exclusivity and privacy.

Taling Ngam Beach has many similarities to Bang Por Beach as it also offers many luxurious resorts and villas. If you’re seeking a bit more of an active honeymoon, with hiking trails and watersports at your doorstep, this area is perfect for the two of you.

Where to stay in Koh Samui for backpackers

The best areas to stay in Koh Samui for backpackers are Chaweng Beach, Lamai Beach, and Taling Ngam.

Chaweng Beach is the most popular area among backpackers because it’s the tourist and nightlife epicenter of the island. And it’s an area that caters to every type of traveller within every budget class, including backpackers. It’s by far the most convenient option you have.

Lamai Beach is a great alternative to Chaweng Beach, and also offers plenty of affordable hotels and hostels. It’s less vibrant, but far from boring and it’s very easy to meet like-minded travellers in this part of the island.

Those who want to stay more remote and a bit off the beaten path should stay around Taling Ngam Beach. This part of Koh Samui offers a more secluded and laid-back atmosphere. Keep in mind that most of the hotels here are exclusive, however, there are guesthouses available in this part of the island too that cater to those travelling on a stricter budget.

1. Chaweng Beach

Chaweng Beach is the tourist epicenter of Koh Samui.

Staying here will automatically give you the advantage of having access to all the facilities you can possibly think of.

There is an abundance of hotels in all budget classes available, as well as restaurants, entertainment venues, and a proper nightlife scene.

The reason why the tourist epicenter is built around Chaweng Beach is simply because the beach is impressive.

Perhaps it’s not the most beautiful beach, it is a beach that is very large.

But don’t get me wrong, it’s still among the best beaches on the island.

So, tourism is concentrated here the most.

But there is something about Chaweng that needs further explanation.

When you ask fellow travellers what they think of Koh Samui, you always get different answers.

There is a large group that loves Koh Samui, but also perhaps an even larger group that tells you to avoid the island at all costs.

Why?

They claim it is too touristy.

Many still look for unexplored parts of the world and that’s, in my opinion, not realistic anymore in Thailand unfortunately.

The most beautiful parts of Thailand are spoiled by mass tourism.

And that’s exactly what Chaweng Beach is.

Yes, it’s extremely touristy, yes it’s crowded, and yes, there are taxi scams.

But please understand this: there is a very good reason why every year, so many tourists stay in Thailand, in this part of Southeast Asia, and particularly in Koh Samui.

It comes with so much convenience.

Places like Koh Samui and Phuket are incredibly touristy, there is no denying that.

But most people who go on holidays, especially those with kids, want convenience and comfort.

And that is exactly what Koh Samui offers.

And that’s exactly why it’s often dubbed a honeymoon island.

Keep in mind, in my opinion, there are two reasons why you should not go to Chaweng Beach.

The first reason is that it’s by far the most crowded part of the island.

If you want something quiet, look for the luxurious parts of Koh Samui or the off-the-beaten-path areas, which we will discuss further down this article.

The second reason is that it’s home to a red light district, which is mainly concentrated around Soi Mango.

You can easily avoid this by simply not going to that street.

In the end, for the majority of travelers, staying in or near Chaweng Beach comes with so many advantages that the disadvantages are easily acceptable.

This is my honest opinion about Chaweng Beach.

Still not convinced if staying here is the best option, perhaps one of the following areas are more suitable for you.

Some of the best hotels to stay in Koh Samui first time in this particular area are listed below:

Agoda is part of Booking.com, and is the best option for booking a hotel in Asia. They often offer significantly cheaper options compared to their competitors, including Booking.com. You’ll get the same service that you are used to at Booking.com, but you simply pay less.

2. Lamai Beach

Lamai Beach is a great alternative to Chaweng Beach.

There are several similarities between these two.

First of all, Lamai Beach is also a bustling area, although definitely not as crowded as Chaweng.

There are plenty of things to do in this part of the island, throughout the day and night.

The nightlife scene is great, although should not compare it to Chaweng (with fewer loud bars and less adult entertainment, but they are still there).

Secondly, there is an abundance of accommodation options, in all budget classes.

Lastly, the accessibility is excellent. Similar to Chaweng, you can easily reach the other popular parts of the island without much hassle.

So, what’s different between Chaweng and Lamai Beach?

One of the major perks of Lamai Beach is that it has one of the best beaches on the island. And it’s far less crowded compared to Chaweng.

Overall, Lamai Beach is less crowded and this results in a far more laid-back atmosphere compared to Chaweng.

And that is the most important thing that Lamai has to offer: great facilities, good accessibility, and most importantly, a far more laid-back vibe.

Because of this, many couples and families tend to stay in Lamai Beach as it’s not as noisy as Chaweng and has less vulgarity.

Just keep in mind that Chaweng is more developed.

When choosing Lamai Beach as the area to stay in, make sure to visit, aside from the island’s main attractions, Lamai’s local attractions.

These include the Walking Street Market, the Hin Ta & Hin Yai Rocks, the Wat Lamai Temple, and the Lamai Cultural Center.

Also, make sure to witness Lamai’s magnificent sunrises.

Agoda is part of Booking.com, and is the best option for booking a hotel in Asia. They often offer significantly cheaper options compared to their competitors, including Booking.com. You’ll get the same service that you are used to at Booking.com, but you simply pay less.

3. Bophut

Bophut is the area northwest of Chaweng Beach and is located near the airport.

During the evening, there aren’t any flights in Koh Samui, so that means you won’t be bothered by airplane noise.

It does mean that you don’t have to travel if you arrive at Koh Samui via its airport.

But that’s not what Bophut is known about.

Bophut is mainly known as being one of the best areas to stay at when visiting Koh Samui with family.

That’s because it’s a quiet area and the presence of several family-oriented activities, including water activities, an elephant sanctuary and a safari.

Many hotels located in this part of the island target mainly families.

But aside from the hotels, what else can you do in Bophut?

Bophut is renowned for its charming Fisherman’s Village, a historical area with traditional Thai-Chinese architecture.

Here, you can find numerous shops, cafes, restaurants, and beachfront bars.

It’s one of the major attractions on the island and definitely the top thing to do in the evening, especially when you’re a couple or visiting the island with family.

Bophut Beach itself is known for its scenic views and calm waters.

The calm waters are ideal for families with younger kids.

It’s a pleasant place to relax and enjoy the beach without the larger crowds that can be found in busier areas.

As you’re located not far from Chaweng Beach, you have the benefit of taking advantage of this fully developed part of Koh Samui with a short taxi ride while staying in a family-friendly and quieter area.

Anything not to like?

The beach is not as beautiful as other parts of the island.

There are fewer things to do compared to Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach.

But other than that, it’s an excellent option for most of the tourists, unless you’re a party-minded traveler.

Agoda is part of Booking.com, and is the best option for booking a hotel in Asia. They often offer significantly cheaper options compared to their competitors, including Booking.com. You’ll get the same service that you are used to at Booking.com, but you simply pay less.

4. Maenam Beach

Maenam Beach is the area west of Bophut and thus further away from Koh Samui’s tourist epicenter.

This comes with advantages and disadvantages.

Let’s start with the advantages.

One of the major perks and why tourists tend to choose Maenam Beach over other areas is the peaceful ambiance.

It’s far less crowded than areas like Chaweng and Lamai, but even quieter than Bophut.

The second reason why you should take Maenam Beach into consideration is that it offers more affordable accommodations and nice resorts for a much better price.

The third reason is Maenam’s scenic beauty.

The beach itself is a long stretch of soft, white sand with crystal-clear waters.

The last advantage is that this area offers a far more local experience compared to the previously three recommended areas.

You can find a local night market here, there are many local restaurants and cafes and the whole area itself has a more traditional feel.

Now, let’s talk about the disadvantages.

The area itself is less developed.

That means that nightlife is limited, there are fewer modern amenities, and those who are seeking a more luxurious stay will not easily find an upscale hotel or private villa.

Also, you have to travel a bit to reach the bustling areas as well as the major attractions of the island, even though Maenam Beach is considered being a central area.

But families who are looking for a true authentic Thai experience on one of the most touristy islands in Thailand should definitely check out this part of Koh Samui.

5. Bang Por Beach

Bang Por Beach is located west of Maenam Beach and is even more remote.

There are several similarities between Maenam Beach and Bang Por Beach.

As you’re more isolated, there are fewer modern amenities and to see the major attractions, you do have to travel a bit.

But still, there are many tourists that choose to stay in Bang Por Beach, so there must be something special about this area.

If you’re looking for a secluded area for relaxing, Bang Por Beach is one of the best options you have.

One of the other perks is that Bang Por Beach offers stunning sunsets.

You can also find several luxurious resorts here, including some of the top brands in the hotel industry.

So, a secluded area with beautiful sunsets and incredibly comfortable resorts and villas…

Shouldn’t that be ideal for those on a honeymoon?

Koh Samui is often dubbed Thailand’s honeymoon island and many couples, honeymooners and those seeking a romantic experience often opt for Bang Por Beach.

And even though you are located a bit further away from the bustling areas and major tourist attractions, you are located directly on the main road that connects Bang Por Beach to the rest of Koh Samui.

If you’re a couple or honeymooner and you want a more bustling area, consider staying at the east side of Lamai Beach or Choeng Mon, the area that we will dive deeper into in the next paragraph.

6. Choeng Mon

Choeng Mon is located on the right top of the island, above Chaweng Beach.

It is home to stunning beaches with soft white sand and clear blue waters.

The beaches are often less crowded than those in more central areas.

Although you can find a few hostels and guesthouses, the majority of its visitors are those seeking a luxurious experience.

Some of the top brands in the hotel industry, like Hyatt and Ritz-Carlton, have resorts here.

Couples, honeymooners but also families are the type of tourists that choose Choeng Mon as their base.

Of course, your budget should allow it.

As you’re located near Chaweng Beach, you are still centrally located and have good access to one of the busiest and most vibrant areas on the island.

But you are staying in a calm area.

That reflects on the beaches, nightlife, and dining options too: expect calm beaches, a relaxed nightlife scene, and elegant restaurants.

Whenever you want to visit something more bustling, you can easily reach Chaweng or even Fisherman’s Village in just a short taxi ride.

And you’re also located near Samui’s international airport.

You’re also located near several major attractions.

But all of this comes with a hefty price tag.

If your budget allows it, and you’re looking for a unique, extremely comfortable accommodation, Choeng Mon is your best option!

7. Taling Ngam Beach

Taling Ngam is an area located on the southwest side of the island, which is completely opposite the bustling tourist epicenter of Koh Samui.

As you might expect, Taling Ngam offers a secluded and tranquil atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a retreat away from the hustle and bustle, Taling Ngam is one of your best options.

The west-facing location of Taling Ngam provides breathtaking sunset views over the Gulf of Thailand.

The area is home to many luxurious resorts and villas.

If you’re looking for a luxurious and exclusive experience, this area offers high-end accommodation options.

The beaches in Taling Ngam are less crowded compared to more popular tourist areas.

The whole area is surrounded by beautiful greenery and coconut groves, and taking one of the hiking trails is an absolute must for nature lovers.

Several resorts in Taling Ngam focus on spa and wellness offerings.

Taling Ngam is also conveniently located for trips to Ang Thong Marine Park, a stunning archipelago of islands known for its natural beauty and diverse marine life.

Now, what’s not to like about this area?

You’re located on the “other side” of the island, away from the tourist epicenter and the main attractions.

That means that you always have to travel quite a bit to reach these island’s highlights.

If that doesn’t bother you, or when you don’t want to be bothered at all, Taling Ngam is an absolute gem!

8. Lipa Noi

The last area that we recommend is Lipa Noi, which is located near the previously recommended area.

There are several similarities between these two areas.

Both of them have a peaceful atmosphere, beautiful beaches, stunning sunsets, and many exclusive resorts and luxurious villas.

The big difference is that Lipa Noi focuses a bit more on families, whereas Taling Ngam is ideal for couples.

But those are minor differences.

The downside is that you have to travel quite a bit to reach the tourist epicenter and its attractions.

But luckily, Lipa Noi is located near Nathon, the main town of Koh Samui.

Also, you’re located near the ferry services.

That makes both Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam ideal for those who arrive on Koh Samui by ferry or those who want to visit other islands too as a day trip.
