The best areas to stay in Ho Chi Minh for the first time are the lower-numbered districts like District 1, District 2, District 3, and District 5.
The lower the number of the district is, the closer you are to the heart of the city and its major attractions.
District 1 is for most tourists the ideal area and this is the tourist epicenter of Ho Chi Minh City.
District 2 is an incredibly modern area and many luxurious hotels with a riverside view can be found here.
District 3 is the most authentic district of these four and is much quieter than District 1. I would highly recommend to have a look here.
District 5 is Ho Chi Minh’s Chinatown and is located close to District 1. It’s a unique part of the city where you can find an abundance of (street) food as well as typical Chinese architecture.
Alternatively, areas like the Binh Thanh District and the Phu Nhuan District offer a much calmer atmosphere as they are mostly residential areas while staying close to the major attractions.

This area is, in general, authentic.

This is because Binh Thanh District is mainly a residential district that doesn’t target tourists at first and the food scene here is untouched.

Just keep in mind that Pham Ngu Lao is a backpacker area, so if you prefer something more comfortable than a hostel, visiting Pham Ngu Lao in the late afternoon and early evening is a better thing to do than staying here.

One of the best alternatives to District 1 is District 3.
This area offers a far more authentic and local experience compared to the bustling tourist areas of District 1.
There are a few attractions located in District 3, but these are not as important as the ones in District 1.

District 2 is a modern district in Ho Chi Minh City that comes with modern infrastructure, buildings, and (clean) streets.

Pham Ngu Lao Area is an area within District 1 and is known as the backpacker’s Walhalla of Ho Chi Minh City.
This whole area is designed for backpackers.

Binh Thanh District is a district located north of District 1 and offers both a local atmosphere and a riverside view while staying close to Ho Chi Minh’s tourist epicenter.
As it’s mainly a residential area, the district is less touristy and gives you a more local and authentic feel.
Compared to District 1, the accommodations in the Binh Thanh District tend to be more affordable, which makes it the ideal area for those travelling on a stricter budget and who want to stay in a relatively quiet area.
The fact that the area is mainly built for locals also means that you can find all sorts of amazing food places.

But even outside the festival season, there is always something to do.
That automatically brings us to one of the downsides of staying in District 5.
It’s loud, even until the late hours.
So, if you’re looking for a peaceful stay, it’s better to pick another district, like the previously recommended area.
Also, the area lacks modern amenities.
But when you want to stay in a unique and historical district full of heritage and tradition, Ho Chi Minh’s Chinatown is one of the coolest options you can pick.
And the abundance of (street) food is the cherry on top.

7. Phu Nhuan District
The Phu Nhuan District is located right next to the airport.
Although it’s the first choice of most tourists, it does come with quite some benefits.
A few years ago, I had to visit HCMC regularly for work, and most of the time, I stayed in the Phu Nhuan District.
Of course, it was convenient to stay near the airport, but the whole area itself felt authentic.
One of the major advantages is that you can find hotels that give you more bang for your buck.
You can find many local eateries here, as well as a few traditional markets and street food stalls.
It’s much quieter than most areas, except for the occasional noise of an airplane.
Taking a taxi to the bustling parts of the city like District 1 only takes you ten minutes.
The people are extremely friendly and during my many stays, I never felt unsafe or got involved in any scam.
There is no nightlife in this part of the city, but that’s not what this district is meant for.
It’s a great place to enjoy a more relaxed environment.
If you prefer to stay closer to the major highlights while being surrounded by so many foreigners and tourists, then choose the lower-numbered districts as your base.
